What you're paying for

A three-phase upgrade isn't one job. It's a network application, new Level 2 work on your service, a meter change and usually switchboard work. The price depends on how much of each your home needs.

What affects the cost

• Overhead or underground service. Replacing an overhead service line is usually simpler than replacing an underground cable, especially if the cable run is long or under concrete.
• Distance to the pole or pillar. Longer runs mean more cable and labour.
• Consumer mains. If your mains are undersized or old, they need replacing too.
• Switchboard. An old board, especially an asbestos meter board, usually has to be replaced to take three-phase protection.
• Metering. A three-phase meter is needed. Your retailer's metering provider usually installs it, and some charge for it.
• Network requirements. Occasionally the network needs to do work on its side to supply the extra capacity.
