Why prices vary so much

Converting an overhead service to underground can be a small job or a big one. It depends almost entirely on the route between the network pole and your meter box.

What affects the cost

• Trench length. The distance from the pole or pillar to your meter box is the biggest single factor.
• What's in the way. Concrete driveways, paths, retaining walls and landscaping add cutting, boring and reinstatement.
• Pole work. A riser and termination usually have to be installed on the network pole.
• Meter box position. If the meter box needs to move or be replaced to suit the underground entry, that adds to the job.
• Footpath and road crossings. Crossing a footpath or road may need council approval and extra work.
