Overview
If your home was built before the late 1980s, there's a good chance your meter board is an old black backing board that may contain asbestos. It's safe while undisturbed, but it can't be drilled, extended or upgraded safely.
We replace the whole board with a new compliant meter box, handling the disconnection, safe removal, metering and reconnection in one job.
Many Sydney homes built before the late 1980s have meter boards made from a material that can contain asbestos. They're usually black or dark brown, often marked with a warning sticker, and sit behind the meter and old fuses. Only testing confirms it, but older boards should be treated as if they contain asbestos.
The board is safe while it's left intact. The risk comes when it's drilled, cut or breaks down, releasing fibres. That's why you shouldn't screw anything new into an old board, and why upgrades like solar or safety switches often trigger a replacement.
The supply is disconnected, the old board is carefully removed and sealed for disposal, a new enclosure and board are fitted, the meter is reinstated and the supply is reconnected. In most cases it's done in a day.
